While most of us have been cooing at a certain 17-year-old singer in Los Angeles since January, our very own Sam Concepcion has been stirring waves in the local scene. So we really couldn't help but feel proud for the teen idol, who has been chosen by Dreamworks to sing Carl Douglas' "Kung Fu Fighting" for the new animated film, Kung Fu Panda.
The 15-year-old will be singing the song for the Philippine release of the film, and it's his voice that we'll be hearing once the ending credits roll. Sam's version will also be part of the special limited edition soundtrack that will be released in Asia.
"It is a rare occasion for a Hollywood movie to have a local artist sing in the soundtrack album. This is Sam's first international recording break, and he truly deserves it," said Selina de Venecia, United International Pictures' general manager.
"It's really an honor for me to be part of this film," an elated Sam told FN. "The message of the song is also inspirational--it's about being your own hero, being the best that you can be."
United International Pictures and Universal Records also produced a music video for Sam, with him dancing and doing some cool kung fu moves. The video, which we were able to see partly in a sneak peek, was shot in a Chinese temple and also featured snippets from the film.
Kung Fu Panda is about Po the Panda, the laziest animal in all of the Valley of Peace, but accidentally turns out the chosen one when enemies threaten their way of life. The film features the voices of Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, Ian McShane, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu, David Cross, Randall Duk Kim, James Hong, Michael Clarke Duncan, and Dan Fogler.
Kung Fu Panda opens June 6 in the Philippines.
