"My Girl" pilot recap: overly cute Kim Chiu, too-young Julian, and cliches abound

May 27, 2008 by FN's Shar Bareng

I don't know about you, but personally I love watching light-hearted shows on primetime, since I get impatient with sobfests (that are far from being tearjerkers anyway) after a long day at work. So, much to my relief, ABS-CBN's remake of the Korean drama, My Girl, was quite delightful--there's so much perkiness going on, although of course, it can't seem to do away with some drama.

My Girl is the story of Jasmine (Kim Chiu), a bubbly Fil-Chinese girl who never runs out of ways to make ends meet. During an attempt to board a plane without a ticket, she meets Julian Abueva (Gerald Anderson), the heir to a corporation who is set to find his missing cousin as per his ailing grandfather's (Ronaldo Valdez) wish.

Before the big meet-up, though, we get a glimpse of their families: Jasmine lives with her widower father (Lito Pimentel), who relies too much on gambling, but that doesn't quite stop Jasmine from adoring him. Julian, in the meantime, is extremely close to his grandfather, Greg Abueva, and aunt Bel (Bing Loyzaga), who took care of him after his parents died in an accident. Then there's the "evil aunt" in the person of Tita Tessie (K Brosas), who wants to be president of the family business after Greg retires.

And because this is a drama, I can't really expect myself to take it seriously despite the quick cuts to the dramatic parts, especially with bloopers such as the continuity error on where Jasmine really is: Subic or Manila? And how come Luneta appears to be in Subic? Hopefully this is something that'll get straightened out in the next episodes.

Also, I can't quite believe that Julian finished at the top of his master's class in Harvard. I mean, come on--aside from the cliche of rich characters going to schools like Harvard (how come I've never heard of anyone in local TV going to Oxford?), he looks dreadfully young to have finished his MBAs. Case in point: He looked like a little lost boy in the scene where he discusses the company's situation with the board members after his grandfather's heart attack. Gerald is good looking, yes, and his acting is pretty okay, but he seriously has to look more like the part.

Still, My Girl should be fun to watch, especially with the extremely adorable Kim Chiu leading the cast. With that perky voice and not-quite-over the top acting, she's truly delightful to watch. Mad props to her, too, for the crying that still looks cute even though we're supposed to feel sad (again, I can't seem to take all the drama seriously--too exasperating). I can only hope the cliches will end with K Brosas' typical antagonist stance, Bing Loyzaga being the too-nice aunt (which she also was in GMA's Marimar. I hope somebody gives her another kind of role before she becomes a typecast!), the rich girl marrying a security guard, the ailing grandfather, the grandson finishing a degree in Harvard, and Jasmine mispronouncing Louis Vuitton and Dolce & Gabbana...oh, wait, that might be too much to ask. But for now, My Girl is something I could unwind with, laugh at, and--who knows--even fall in love with, now that I'm starting to believe the Kim and Gerald pair.

What did you think of the My Girl pilot? Is it believable enough? And are you going to follow it, the way that you've probably followed the original Korean drama?
