MTV recently conducted a survey among young Asians to find out how passionate they are about music and if there are any other music related activities they're interested in. And, no surprise with the results: The Filipino youth are certainly one of the most passionate about music, along with the Indians, Vietnamese, and Thai.
Conducted with 5,741 participants aged 15 to 34 years old, the survey also found that Asians commonly use their mobile phones to listen to music, with 66% of them claiming to listening more to music now that it's digital. Only Australians, Vietnamese, and Malaysians still collect CDs and DVDs. When it comes to the question of downloading music without paying, 55% of respondents from China, the Philippines, and Thailand top the list.
There's a positive note for Asian artists, though, as MTV also found out that support for local artists have gone up as well. Ian Stewart, Senior Vice President of Viacom Brand Solutions & Research, MTV Networks Asia, said, "We continue to see the dominance of Asian music across the region, with over 80% of preference being for artists in local language. A handful of global celebrities make the top list of favored singers, though very few regional artists that cross many borders. The Asia Loving Asia trend remains, with a very local spin this year."
While it's sad to learn that we're topping the piracy list, it's also good to see that our local artists are getting ahead. Honestly, though, if the Philippines finally gets an iTunes Store, would you be willing to buy digital music for your music players? Or will you stick to buying CDs? Let us know in the poll below.
How are you going to say no to music piracy?
