Day of the verdict: Will Regine be a hit as Kim Sam Soon?

Jun 30, 2008 by FN's Trixie Reyna

ako_si_kim_sam_soon.jpgTonight we will find out if Regine Velasquez will do judgment to the sardonic yet endearing lead character, Kim Sam Soon, of the Korean romantic-comedy series My Name is Kim Sam Soon when the Philippine remake premieres on GMA-7.

This will be Regine’s second primetime TV series, after Forever in My Heart which, albeit boasting of a beautiful and promising story, did not do as well as its GMA counterparts in the ratings game back in 2004. Will this be the Songbird’s chance to redeem herself on primetime? Will her acerbic and hilariously snarky personality make her click for the role? To make her look more convincing, a fat-belly suit was even specially created for her for this show.

After all, she really did well in her romantic-comedy films, all of which were blockbuster hits. But will her portrayal of the baker-turned-pastry chef (now named Kim Samsoon Buot) who is still single and looking in her late 30s, be as well-received by the audience, particularly the mostly female avid fans of the empowering series? We will soon find out.

Other portrayals to watch out for are Mark Anthony Fernandez’ of Kim Sam Soon’s leading man, Cyrus, and Nadine Samonte’s Hannah, the beautiful ex-fiance’ and first love of Cyrus. Some people have wanted Heart Evangelista for the role, especially since she’s a dead ringer for the Korean actress Jung Ryu Won who portrayed the role in the original. Doctor to the Stars Vicki Belo’s handsome sweetheart, Dr. Hayden Kho, also makes his acting debut as part of the cast.

If you liked My Name is Kim Sam Soon as much as we did, you would surely be keen to watch, not just Regine, but the entire production of how they made the Pinoy adaptation of the Korean hit. Directors Dominic Zapata and Khryss Adalia are at the helm.

Ako si Kim Sam Soon premieres on GMA primetime after Dyesebel tonight.

When I was seeing ads pa lang for it, I was thinking this was probably meant for Sunshine Dizon because she hasn't had a project with 7 lately. And that this was given to Regine because of her attempt to switch to 2, but I'm not really a follower of local showbiz these are just what I hear when people watch at home :-). I didn't feel the role would be for Regine, but after seeing the first episode I got hooked, so she must be doing something good. Not a fan of Mark Anthony either but I like him now even if he's not that good of an actor, in my opinion. Peace!
