WIFI and Security
« on: February 26, 2012, 10:33:12 am »
I don't know where to post my question, so Mods kindly merge na lang po kung saan man, i searched wifi walang lumalabas na related eh.

Anyway, We're sharing wifi sa neighbor namin. Sa kanila yung router and kami lang dalawa nakakaalam password. Nagbabasa basa ako about security issues ng wifi and it's really not stable. Is it really possible na my neighbor can monitor EVERYTHING i do in the internet? (read my emails, FB chat, sites i visit, even mga post ko sa forums) and can access my desktop or phone content (i use wifi din sa phone ko) without my knowledge?

Or may mga hacker na nagro-roam around the neighborhood, scanning for wifi then monitors the activities (bank transactions and the like)
Medyo complicated mga explanations, but sana may expert dito that could enlighten us. Paranoid lang ako.  :P

^^pano yang sniffer sis? Kinakabit ganun?

Make sure nalang na yung wi-fi niyo eh secure. Naka password protect naman so ok na yun.

ang tanong sis nagagamit ba nila pc nyo? in terms of router sharing -- yes they can monitor your activities like they can see kung nakaonline ang mga devices nyo pero di nila makikita kung ano mismo binubuksan nyo.. ang pwede lang nila gawin is to restrict your access sa mga certain websites and ayusin ang priority kung normal, high or less kayo with it comes to bandwidth consumption.. im talking about internet connection speed btw.. if advanced users sila ah.. pero for normal users di nila yan alam :D

opps sorry packet sniffer is for your network.. it monitors your traffic.. for network administrators lang ito.. nakikita mo lang dito puro IP address :D

Im not a hacker, i work as a UNIX person and normally we dont have a problem with it kasi UNIX is so secure kasi di naman siya user friendly.. pero i heard may mga software or programs na ginagawa to get passwords sa mga accounts madalas for windows OS.. pero sis dont worry naka HTTPS naman ang halos lahat ng transaction sa internet na may payment.. (with "s") kasi secure yun..

if this bothers you so much sis, I suggest get your own router and internet connection.. and i think matagal nyo nanaman neighbor yan so wag ka masyado mag-alala :)

yes mostlikely pwede yan mahack :) kung nagagamit nila yung phone..

BTW for a more secure wifi connection, i don't suggest password protected routers like WPA or WEP.. learn about MAC address filtering mas secure yun kasi only registered MAC address (physical address which is unique on every network capable device) lang ang pwede magka-connect sa wifi.. yun lang tedious kasi when you bought a new device you'll have to add it again sa router settings mo.. but this is more secure ;D

^It's under Account Settings > Security > Secure Browsing.

^i see.
Thank You so much sis, naliwanagan ako.  ;D

Balikan ko lang pala to sis.. Yung https lang ang secure di ba? So pwedeng ma-hack passwords like here sa GT and FB app sa phone since http lang sila?

Anyway, We're sharing wifi sa neighbor namin. Sa kanila yung router and kami lang dalawa nakakaalam password. Nagbabasa basa ako about security issues ng wifi and it's really not stable. Is it really possible na my neighbor can monitor EVERYTHING i do in the internet? (read my emails, FB chat, sites i visit, even mga post ko sa forums) and can access my desktop or phone content (i use wifi din sa phone ko) without my knowledge?

Question is, bago ba ang router nila? If it is old then the router might be using WEP (a type of WIFI security) which can be easily hacked in just a few minutes using the right hacking tools. If you are using Windows 7 you can see the security type when you hover the mouse over the Wifi network icon near the system time, and then hover the mouse over the name of your neighbor's network.

The most secure network these days is the WPA2-PSK type.

FYI, MAC addresses can be spoofed so the security isn't foolproof. Anyway, it's adds a bit more hurdle for "less techie" hackers.

If your email, social network (facebook) and other websites offer "https" or "secured browsing" settings, then use it. It protects you from those wifi hackers.

I'd actually get worried MORE on accessing public wifi (coffee shops, SM free wifi, open wifi's on the road) rather than your neighbor's wifi. I'd put more trust on my neighbor's wifi, unless I get into personal conflicts with them. There are plenty of people accessing the public wifi, and there could be one curious hacker out there sniffing your data.

^MAC OS po gamit namin, pano makita? And i hardly use my macbook, for downloads lang. I use my phone or itouch for browsing the net and checking my FB. Http lang yung sa fb right? not with S?
So it's not safe to use my fb app on my phone? Or post sa forums like GT?

About public wifi, yun nga. Kasi, nabasa ko nga na may mga tools to access your data, though i'm not worried sa neighbor ko. I'm just paranoid na someone else might gain access through our network then do these stuff, yung cousin kasi ni hubby nakigamit one time so we gave him the password and asked our neighbor to change the password after. But minsan nakaka-connect pa din si cousin, nadedetect ng device nya yung old connection with us and gumagana pa din yung old password..?
I'm not assuming but we just dont trust him that much pagdating sa snooping around, curious george yun. so nung nabasa ko about wifi security bigla ako nag-worry esp medyo techie yun.

sis, same LAN kayo kung gusto niyang makita network activities mo magagawa niya.

If your neighbor is not techie, I guess walang problema.

I suggest getting your own router and internet connection sis. Lalo na if you do online banking. Better safe than sorry.
