« on: January 04, 2012, 06:30:08 am »

for my shih tzu, I use heartgard every month, sa bulldog naman since he is on a mange medication, advocate or ivomec ang gamit sa kanya monthly. Yung tzu ko nasa loob lang ng bahay, pero nagstart kami magheartgard since 4mos old pa lang sya, 3 mos. ko sya nakuha btw.

as early as two months pwede na sila ng heartworm prevention, pero usually pag nacomplete na ang shots saka ito binibigay, ang suggestion ko lang don't wait  til your dog reaches his 6th month bago pa magbigay ng heartworm preventive. heartworms need 6months before it develops so pwedeng meron na ang dog pero di lang visible sa test since maliit pa sila.  Kung older na ang dog pero first time nya pa lang magheartworm prevention, ask the vet to perform a heartworm test, you cannot give heartgard or  advocate if the dog is positive for heartworms, these products are only for prevention at iba ang medication pag positive sa heartworms, at mas masakit sa bulsa, so better start early and mark your calendars monthly para di makaligtaan. Being an indoor dog is not excuse, kahit nasa loob lang ng bahay wala silang ligtas sa heartworms, so make sure to add a heartgard prevention to your monthly regimen  ;)

Dont even bother explaining! I cant believe you.

heartworms kasi need 6 mos before they can turn into adult heartworms, meaning pwedeng positive na sila pero eggs pa lang at di pa visible sa microscope, kaya ganyan ang sinabi sayo ng vet sis. We don't need to wait til they reach 6mos bago tayo magbigay ng heartworm preventive, what if positive na pala? eh di hindi rin mabibigyan ng preventive, medication na ang kailanga. Vets give the 6month rule because of two things: either engot sila at hindi sila aware that it will take 6 months bago maging adult ang worms which I doubt kasi pinagaralan naman nila yan, or gusto lang nila tayong gumastos ng malaki for the heartworm treatment. According to other pet owners that I've talked to, malaki ang magagastos sa heartworm treatment, so why wait for it to happen kung pwede naman maprevent? It is always best to give prevention hanggat hindi pa sila positive. Prevention is better than cure ika nga.

My toy poodle was given Pro Heart, vaccine siya. Next shot is after 6 months.  Is that different from Heartgard?

sis to avoid too much stress sa liver nya, you can give liver supplements like liv52, liverolin, sylimarin capsules. talk also to your vet about your concerns para mapanatag loob mo.

Sis try mo share sa kanila yung about ProHeart, tell them na hindi ka comfortable and ask for other types of treatments. Baka sakaling maliwanagan sila at ipull-out nila if may magsabi about the risks.

I also use Heartgard Plus monthly. Aside from being economical, it also kills other types of worms kaya mas gusto ko sya kesa dun sa injections.

Sa puppies ko I started giving them during their 4th month. Indoors din sila pero I walk them daily kasi and sobrang talamak ang lamok dito sa subdivision namin at madaming namamatay na aso due to heartworm kaya necessity talaga to for me. :)
