^ thanks, sis...
for all those living in high-rise buildings... i used to have 2 cats-- my 8-year old domestic and my then 1 yr 11 mo old ragamuffin. my sister and i are both in the medical profession so we stay in the 10th floor of our condo in manila. our unit has a terrace and we keep it open because the litterbox is there. we didn't think it would be a problem. our 8-year old cat doesn't jump up naman and if he does, he doesn't jump off. anyway, it was raining hard. my sister was duty in the hospital and i was out with my boyfriend (since it was 2 days before my birthday!). when my boyfriend and i got back, hindi namin mahanap si ashe, my kitten. we looked everywhere, pati sa ibang floors... until finally, naisip kong sumilip sa terrace. our unit is right above the roof of the lobby kasi which extends to the driveway. it was very dark and ashe was grey with white socks. honestly, ang tagal kong nakastare sa roof ng lobby kasi ayaw tanggapin ng isip ko na may white akong nakikita. when i told my boyfriend, he couldn't believe it either, ayaw din niyang tanggapin. he takes care of my cats kasi when im not in the country. we went down sa street to look up and find my cute bundle of fur on the roof... fur lang niya nakita namin.
it gets worse. we asked the condo people if we can borrow a ladder. ours wouldn't reach the roof kasi... unfortunately, wala silang ladder that high! it was raining pa din and buong gabi iyak lang ako ng iyak kasi my kitten was there, sa roof, and hindi ko siya makuha. my brother, who gave me the kitten, went to our condo. the only consolation was that, as he pointed out, ashe probably died on impact and she didn't suffer long. the next day i had to leave early for batangas. i called up my mom telling her na kahit gift na niya sa akin na mababa si ashe from the roof... we had her cremated.
until now, naiiyak pa din ako when i remember. ang sakit eh kasi almost birthday ko and a month before her birthday... and before i left that night, i only said goodbye to my other cat kasi nasa ilalim ng kama si ashe. i kept thinking, what if hindi na lang ako lumabas nung night na yun... all my friends were sad din because ashe was the malambing type. for a month or so my older cat would look for ashe before we go to sleep. palagi kasi sila naglalaro during that time.

sorry, medyo out of topic na. and trying to steer back on track, i guess we can learn a lot from the experience:
- always say goodbye to your pets, kahit sa labas ka lang ng gate pupunta
- if you feel uneasy leaving them, by all means have someone cat-sit!
- for cat-owners living in condos... a rubber padding on your terrace would really help if bawal maglagay ng screen or grills... actually, i can't think of anything else so if may ideas ko, please share!
