Based on experience, and as a player itself, madali matutunan kung pano maglaro ng chess, it's the strategy na mahirap matutunan. I'd say, chess tactic is more on a skill to be enhanced, but not a study that can be taught.

What do you mean po dito? Chess tactical ability can be enhanced by solving chess tactical puzzles :)

^It's a skill na ineenhance, hindi natutunan. I mean, kung wala talaga yung skill sa'yo, wala kahit anong aral mo. We are talking about analytical skills na dito, which has something to do with your brain.

Glad to have found a chess thread here. I've been playing chess since i was 5, and chess varsity from elementary to college. True, mahilig ako sa math that's why i took up engineering at may kinalaman pala chess dun? Sa english hindi ko sure hahaha! My grammar sucks!  :)

Yup may mga tao na no matter what they did, they can't be good as the other, but of course anybody can improve their play in chess, by studying endgames, tactics and positional play. For example I have seen many players who does not know the very basic opposition concept in king and pawn endgames, as a result a position that should be draw turn into a lose, or position that should be win turned into a draw.

As I told kung may mga anak kayo, encourage them to play chess, it has many benefits.

STUDIES

Quote
In a 1973-74 Zaire study conducted by Dr. Albert Frank, employing 92 students, age 16-18, the chess-playing experimental group showed a significant advancement in spatial, numerical and administrative-directional abilities, along with verbal aptitudes, compared to the control group. The improvements held true regardless of the final chess skill level attained. [1], [2], [7]

In a 1974-1976 Belgium study, a chess-playing experimental group of fifth graders experienced a statistically significant gain in cognitive development over a control group, using Piaget's tests for cognitive development. Perhaps more noteworthy, they also did significantly better in their regular school testing, as well as in standardized testing administered by an outside agency which did not know the identity of the two groups. Quoting Dr. Adriaan de Groot: ...``In addition, the Belgium study appears to demonstrate that the treatment of the elementary, clear-cut and playful subject matter can have a positive effect on motivation and school achievement generally...'' [1], [3], [7]

My son, he's 6 (pictured) and started playing when he was in Kindergarten. I'm surprised he picked up this game so quickly. He's very good and been winning on tournaments and consistently on top in his category. I fondly remember his first 4-move checkmate...he ran out of the hallway and screaming: "Yes! I won on a 4-move checkmate!". He just turned 5 then. I literally covered his mouth because it's not something to be proud of when you're trying it on on rookies :)

His USCF rating now is 833. And I agree with Giri, this is a very good program for your kids. It trains their minds to focus and have a plan. Darn good in Math too (and we didn't even registered him in any Math programs like Kumon)! Chess does develop your child's Math skills. From the basic of adding up your points, to algebraic notations.

So if you have children, buy them a chess board. They'll have fun once they know how to play the game.
