The Kindness of La Union

Filed under: The Kindest Thing Someone Has Done For Me — JR Isaac @ 6:00 pm

One of my must-do lists is to learn something new as much as time permits, and one of these is to surf. Recently I didn’t say no to an opportunity to learn and to brave the waves of La Union for a two-day surfing clinic organized by Liquid Body Surf School, through the kindness of Christian Ong and Tim Goetsch. The experience was overwhelming, with both my body and my mind put into exercise. To learn the discipline on how to catch the wave and to strike a balancing act required a lot falling, white wash outs and waiting for the right wave to ride on. The constant practice and focus was rewarded with a sense of calmness as I glided either gently or roughly in the sea. It was an addictive feeling even if it made me feel like I was spinning inside a washing machine.

Now I must admit that I can’t wait to back to La Union to be with the waves. I appreciate the kindness of Christian and Tim, who helped me mark another check at must-do list. And lastly I would like to thank Ree Soria for capturing these moments.

Waiting in Vain

Fresh out of college, I had a job interview lined up. My sched for the day was simple enough: I would set off for my interview first thing in the morning; factoring in a test or two, that would take half a day at most, so I could meet H for lunch and spend some quality time with him.

By noon, it looked like all my plans were going to go pfffft. Apparently, the company, in a Highlander-esque move, intended to whittle down all the applicants ‘til they found The One at the end of the day. I should have been thankful that I was still in the slowly shrinking group as the day progressed, but it was simply overshadowed by stress.

My Little Superhero

Ate, pakihanap naman yung red headband ko. Nagmamadali na ako eh.” My trusty househelp was on all fours, looking under my bed, into my messy closet and all my bags. I had been looking for my headband for half an hour, and it was nowhere to be found. I was having a bad hair day, and tying that red sash around my messy head would make my frizzy, tikwas hair seem deliberate, ala Nicole Ritchie. I was sweating in my clothes and had all the paper bags strewn across my bed. I was running late for a shoot, and I was hating my hair. My red sash/headband was always just hanging by my mirror, but now it was nowhere to be found.
