Kilig Songs

Filed under: My Week So Far — Tisha Alvarez @ 3:36 pm

Normally, when we’re pulling an all-nighter at the office, we end up having a Karaoke Night of sorts—we play old musical favorites and sing along as we work. This keeps everyone in good spirits even as we burn the midnight oil. We sometimes have themes, such as “80s classics” (The Jets are a favorite) and “boybands” (where we have fun with vintage Backstreet Boys).

Last night, Coni mentioned that she really liked “If I Never Knew You” from Pocahontas, and it led to our “animated film” theme. We all went nuts, remembering “I Won’t Say (I’m in Love)” from Disney’s Hercules. We love, love, love this song!

[Meg:]
If there’s a prize for rotten judgement
I guess I’ve already won that
No man is worth the aggravation
That’s ancient history, been there, done that!

[Muses:] Who’d'ya think you’re kiddin’
He’s the Earth and heaven to you
Try to keep it hidden
Honey, we can see right through you
Girl, ya can’t conceal it
We know how ya feel and
Who you’re thinking of

[Meg:]
No chance, no way
I won’t say it, no, no

[Muses:]
You swoon, you sigh
why deny it, uh-oh

[Meg:]
It’s too cliche
I won’t say I’m in love

I thought my heart had learned its lesson
It feels so good when you start out
My head is screaming get a grip, girl
Unless you’re dying to cry your heart out
Oh

[Muses:]
You keep on denying
Who you are and how you’re feeling
Baby, we’re not buying
Hon, we saw ya hit the ceiling
Face it like a grown-up
When ya gonna own up
That ya got, got, got it bad

[Meg:]
No chance, now way
I won’t say it, no, no

[Muses:]
Give up, give in
Check the grin you’re in love

[Meg:]
This scene won’t play,
I won’t say I’m in love

[Muses:]
You’re doin flips read our lips
You’re in love

[Meg:]
You’re way off base
I won’t say it
Get off my case
I won’t say it

[Muses:]
Girl, don’t be proud
It’s O.K. you’re in love

[Meg:]
Oh
At least out loud,
I won’t say I’m in love

If you’ve never heard this song, I suggest you look for it pronto—and while you’re at it, go see Hercules as well. It’s one of my all-time favorite Disney movies. However, I’ve only seen it once! Must look for a DVD…

After doing a “Disney’s Greatest Hits” set, Carl asked if I knew the song that went “I just can’t stop thinking about you, I can’t explain it…” He proceeded to sing the whole verse up until the chorus. We didn’t know the title, but eventually found Stacy Lattisaw’s “Can’t Stop Thinking about You.” I just realized that it’s an awesome song for the lovesick—there’s an urgency in her voice and in the lyrics, and it’s like she’s having a little battle inside herself. She knows what she’s feeling, but should she tell him?

I want you, I need you but I’m afraid to show you
Why can’t I just tell you the way I feel about you
Please help me, please tell me
I’m not the only one in love…oooh
I’m not the only one in love

I’m generally not into love songs—I can’t stand all the “It Might Be You”’s and “More than You’ll Ever Know”’s. I had my rock phase, and am now mostly into hiphop and R n’ B, but every now and then, there are these kilig songs that have me feeling giddy. “At least out loud, I won’t say I’m in love…” Yeeha!
