“Rule” Books

Filed under: On My Nightstand — Tisha Alvarez @ 6:26 pm

H and I were hanging out at Fully Booked before catching a friend’s performance at Mag:Net, and this book caught my eye:

Though I normally gravitate toward fiction books, I’m a bit of a sucker for history (which some have argued is one of the more useless subjects). But I like learning about the past, and how the world turned into what it is. This particular book caught my interest because it was about how women managed (or didn’t manage) to rule in a patriarchal society.

The Shows I’m Watching Now

Filed under: Ramblings, Entertainment — Tisha Alvarez @ 4:38 pm

I don’t have the patience to download TV shows from the Net (heck, I’ve never even downloaded a song), so my eyes glaze over whenever friends talk about Gossip Girl or season 2 of Heroes. I don’t have a lot of time to watch TV, and normally I’d rather read or hang out with friends than veg in front of the boob tube. But lately, I’ve had a bit of down time and have been watching the following shows:

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Monday to Friday, 9:00 pm, AXN Beyond)
I discovered Buffy too late, you see. I used to find it weird when my friends would tell me that they were so into it. I mean, a teenager who’s out to rid the world of vampires? How brainless is that? I couldn’t even imagine what kind of flimsy plots each episode had. But I turned into a true-blue Buffy fan when I started watching regularly…on its fifth season! Hence, I missed seeing Cordelia, the whole Angel romance, a sister-less Buffy…I even missed Buffy in high school! Now’s my chance to catch up on this well-loved series. (Yes, I do understand now why it has a cult following.)

The Search for the Perfect Videoke Song

Filed under: My Week So Far — Tisha Alvarez @ 9:58 am

I have yet to find the perfect videoke song for my voice. I would often do Spice Girls or Britney (“Sometimes” is a favorite), but I still haven’t found the song that I actually feel like I could sing well.

I used to be super conscious about singing videoke in front of a lot of people. When I was younger, I was part of the choir, so people kind of expected me to have a good voice. But I figured out long ago that my voice was made for group singing, and wasn’t meant to be a solo act. Thrust a mic in my hand, and my voice changes. It’s weird, but it really happens. Perhaps I’m the singing equivalent of a choker?

Behind the Scenes

Filed under: Ramblings — Tisha Alvarez @ 9:29 am

When I started out in the magazine industry, my friends would often say things like, “Wow naman! Ang exciting naman ng trabaho mo!” To which I would reply,
“Anyone who thinks this job is all glamour is so misguided!” Sure, there are fun events to attend, interesting people to meet, cool products to try out. But there’s so much more to it than that.

The readers see the final product—a beautifully set-up living room, a perfectly made-up model, impeccably styled clothes. But they don’t see the hours spent pulling out (mag-speak for “borrowing items for photo shoots”); the time spent in the bowels of shopping malls, waiting for said pullouts; the grunt work required to lug a piece of furniture to the shoot location; the tediousness of carefully unwrapping and re-wrapping borrowed items.

Blast from the Past

Filed under: My Week So Far — Tisha Alvarez @ 5:30 pm

My past has come back to haunt me.

Years ago, I was severely anemic. So much so that my doctor refused to allow me to travel unless I got my hemoglobin count up. So it was a lot of iron, and the occasional servings of liver for me.

My anemia followed me throughout college and through my first job, but it never really bothered me the way it used to. Didn’t really give much thought to it ‘til last night. See, a few days ago, the back of my neck and my head kind of hurt. The masseuse asked, “Ma’am, high blood ba kayo?” I thought about all the fried, fatty things I shouldn’t have been eating (but which were a normal part of my diet) and made a mental note to check my blood pressure. And then yesterday, I got a dizzy spell—something I hadn’t had in a really long time. So last night, I took my BP and—what do you know—it was abnormally low! (Or “BORDERLINE LOW,” warned a chart that I consulted. I got some mild scolding/worried messages from both my mother and H.)

Style and Luxury In Fusion

Filed under: Events — JR Isaac @ 6:01 pm

Stylishly Motorola—these are two words to describe the sights of the night. The Puey Quiñones gala fashion show, entitled Luxe Fusion, was a very magnificent event. The backdrop and stage looked simple yet chic to accommodate marvelous fabrics strewn together to create a masterpiece. Puey’s muses were also present to add glitz and glamour to the event. Every girl needs accessories for their Puey created outfit. And the cherry on top is the luxury edition of Motorola – the Motorazr2 V8. The 18k gold plated accents add just the right touch of glimmer to every girl’s outfit. The gala event was a night of luxury, excess of artistry and glamour. And definitely, Puey’s creations made its mark on everyone’s To Have List.

Heath Ledger: 1979-2008

Filed under: My Week So Far — Tisha Alvarez @ 1:51 pm

It’s a sad way to start the day when you find out one of the most talented actors of our time is dead. I can’t say I’m a big Heath Ledger fan but he was in my top five list of Hollywood crushes when my friends and I were comparing notes a few years ago. But more than that, I respected his work, and that he wasn’t going after the big, blockbuster movie roles. I found it so sweet when the Brokeback cast was on Oprah and Anne Hathaway was talking about Heath and Michelle William’s budding romance—how the two would shyly look at each other, how they ended up sharing one trailer as filming progressed.
