Wanted: Sleeping Pills

Filed under: My Week So Far — Faye Ilogon @ 9:43 am

Insomnia is not cool. It’s only cool for people who don’t really have it. It’s only fascinating when it’s Edward Norton suffering from it in stylish agony in Fight Club. (Warning: spoiler ahead.) In that movie, Norton’s insomnia caused him to develop a split personality: Brad Pitt. What I’d give to project a split personality who looks like Angelina Jolie.

Anyway, for the past two weeks, my insomnia has come back with a vengeance. I’ve been up until six in the morning and then I make my way to work at around half past nine. Sometime between six and nine, I doze off and dream that I’m at work working on an article draft. In my dream, the words are floating about and I just pluck them from the air and put them together on paper. Alas, I am then jolted awake by the chirping of a bird outside my window. (Hey, I’d like being awakened by a different kind of bird one of these days.) I don’t know if it’s the same bird or if it’s a whole family of birds who get together and say, “It’s your turn to chirp outside her window today.”

Back in the ancient times of the 70s, where there was no internet, MTV or Cartoon Network to while my hours away, I entertained myself by reading. My favorite then was the Childcraft series, twelve volumes of books ranging from math to biology to botany to raising children. At eight years old, I had already read all the volumes, even the “Guide for Parents”, which taught me what to expect during puberty (which I blame for my obsession to get my period asap and the need to wear a bra at eight years old), how to successfully raise my future children and how to deal with marital problems (heh?).

Silly Putty

Filed under: The Silliest Thing I've Done So Far — Myrza Sison @ 4:13 pm

Silly Puttytdmk. A trademark for a soft colored modeling material that can be stretched and bounced.

The silliest things I’ve ever done in my life have all involved money.

After chucking what was supposed to be a dream job in SGV & Co., where I basically counted beans for a living (okay, fine, I wrote accounts receivable, payroll and inventory software in dBase III+, guess what year), I really thought my next and future life would just become one fabulous glam slam under the klieg lights, sashaying (yes, in that hip-swinging motion we were known to have walked in then) down the runway, or “emoting” (trademark emotions: Headache Pose, Stomachache Pose, or Hug the Backdrop) in the studio.

Silly Patterns

It has been five years since I have not been attached with someone and as the years pass, my solitude is slowly building up walls of comfort that I don’t recognize what is right from wrong. The state of comfort has thickened my walls, windows have been shut and the door tightly locked. I’ve been very content in enjoying the company of family, bradas and sistahs, plus the perks of having my regular booty calls. I have lost the need to be romantically attached.

Foreign Acts

Filed under: My Week So Far — JR Isaac @ 11:24 am

Just recently, I got a chance to be a part of the exclusive press presentation of the two major foreign acts here in Manila—emorock band Fall Out Boy and American Idol alumnus Elliot Yamin. They were definitely hot and fresh, and gave amazing performances for their Filipino fans when they were here.

At first, Fall Out Boy didn’t ring a bell for me. It was nice to know them through their music and mind you, it wasn’t the usual rowdy type but rather a more passionate pop slash rock group. They don’t mind joining the pop bandwagon stereotypes. They write catchy songs that can sound cheesy sometimes, but if you listen well, you might be surprised with what the band has to offer.

Romeo, Oh Romeo, Wherefore Art Thou, Romeo?

Filed under: How far should one go on their first date? — JR Isaac @ 10:35 am

Dating rules are one of the greatest mysteries next to the discovery of the fountain of youth. And if I end up with a date, which is always a challenge for me, I will definitely go as far as it takes us. My personal mantra when it comes to dating is “time is of essence”, in short, my patience is very very short, my standards are pretty much set and falling in love is definitely a decision. I act what’s on my mind rather than speak it and despise myself when I don’t.

Life-Changing Silliness

Filed under: The Silliest Thing I've Done So Far — Faye Ilogon @ 9:00 am

Picture this: you’re 16 years old and you want to please your parents all the time. When it comes to your college applications, they tell you to put in BS Nursing as your first choice. You do it. But you secretly hope you don’t make the cut for that course and, instead, get taken into the Creative Writing program, which you had put in as your second choice. It is then that God decides to teach you a lesson about going after what you really want and being honest.
