Who am I?

Filed under: Me, Myself, and I — Emma Cerise @ 2:58 pm

It’s always the simple things that kick me in the ass.

Waiting for the first “assigned” topic for this blog, I was polishing my artillery of unsolicited advice and madcap opinions. Ask me what I think about the Harry Potter craze and I could wax hysterical on how literacy has to be borne on the wings of hyped consumerism and yet opine gratefully that at least today’s generation has summoned the thirst for reading again…all while musing what would happen if Hermione ended up snoggin’ with Harry instead of Ron, or how Ralph Fiennes is still hopelessly English Patient delectable underneath all that reptilian prosthetic.

Or, on the more socially relevant side of the fence, toss me a conundrum on free trade, a concept I’m intimate with only in as much as I can bookmark it on CNN.com and BBC.com… You will find that even my ambivalence can be highly opinionated.

But “Who are you?” Where do I even begin?

Let’s go easy: name first.

I’ve gotten a lot of questions about my surname, Cerise (se-REES), which, it turns out, is French for “cherry.” Whether or not I am of far removed French descent, I have no idea. Coz if my dad’s looks are any indicator, French Moroccan pa siguro, puede…or the kind of French that comes from anywhere but France. Further attempts at lineage investigation have proven futile, and so I will leave it at this: I don’t know what significant and historical bearing my strange surname has, except that in Paris, it is that small round fruit you top an ice cream sundae with, or for the more adult, that which lies at the bottom of a glass of currant-7.

My name is Emma, and no, I wasn’t named by an English Lit professor of a mother after a Jane Austen heroine. My mom is an accountant and she likes Clint Eastwood movies.

In this motley crew of bloggers, I am officially the “tell it like it is traveler” — the commissioned bearer of acid and all things caustic in case things get dangerously peachy in here; yes, the designated b*tch. I’d like to think that’s subject to debate, but let’s reserve that for another blog entry. Enough about me for now. Who I am will eventually trickle down through the many itchyfoot misadventures I’ll be chronicling—some of them far and wide, some just ‘round the bend. In any case, I have only this to say: You comin’ or what?

  1. Hmmm…Ms. Cherry…in French at that. I like it. Sure, I’ll come along for the ride, though I’m not much of a shotgun seat kinda guy. I’m more of the wait-in-the-backseat-with-a-length-of-clothesline type. Do keep up the writing. I do sooo love reading other people’s blogs. Ta ta…for now. I’ll be seeing you around, just look in your rear view mirror.

  4. TO STRESS JUNKIE: “I’ll be seeing you around, just look in your rear view mirror.” That’s funny, bordering a bit on “stalker,” haha! But funny!

TO GIMIKERA: Hi! Sorry, I hear you, I actually didn’t get around to saying anything real about myself in the Who Am I entry! Anyway, what do I do? Well, a year ago, I resigned from a mid-level management post at a PR firm. I cashed out a sizeable portion of my savings, packed my bags and books, and moved to Dumaguete where I lived for a year, taught features writing for a semester, and bartended at a bar’s friend for around 3 months. Just one of those I-gotta-get-out-of-here things. Now I’m back in the urban jungle, pondering a few career options, freshly rebooted! (Wow, that’s an entire blog right there, huh?)

TO TAHLULA: Thanks! Thanks! I KNOW YOU!!!!

  7. Oh either which way!
