Top Filipino designers dress Barbie

The iconic Barbie doll is clothed by Pinoy fashion’s finest--for a cause. By Stephanie Castillo

Famous Filipino designers, including the likes of Rajo Laurel, Jojie Lloren, and Cesar Gaupo, have created couture ballet costumes in doll size for every girl’s favorite toy—Barbie! The auction-exhibit, commissioned by Ballet Philippines, will be held on March 17 at the Peninsula Manila Hotel and will benefit 30 scholars of the dance company.

Designers were given no parameters except that they produce miniature pieces that a ballerina could wear as a dance costume, as well as creations for royal and princess collections. Ballet Philippines’ chairman, 1973 Miss Universe Margie Moran Floirendo, hopes to raise one million pesos from the proceeds of the auction. She shares that the event is open to all collectors and Ballet Philippines enthusiasts. Certainly, the more avid Barbie fans attend, the more funds can be raised for the company’s scholars.

The roster of participating designers includes Pepito Albert, Aureo Alonso, Jerome Ang, Ivarluski Aseron, Avel Bacudio, Vittorio Barba, Alex Bitong, JC Buendia, Mitzi Quilendrino-Bustos, Louis Claparols, Auggie Cordero, Dong Omaga Diaz, Patrice Ramos Diaz, Rhett Eala, Joel Escober, Ramon Esteban, Veejay Floresca, Tan-Gan by Solenn Heussaff, Cesar Gaupo, Katrina Goulborn, Len Nepomuceno-Guiao, Sassa Jimenez, Gerry Katigbak, Rajo Laurel, Brian Leyva, Jojie Lloren, Jerome Lorico, Dennis Lustico, Pitoy Moreno, New Yorker by Tina Lirag, Tippi Ocampo, Randy Ortiz, Frederick Peralta, Eric Pineda, Puey Quinones, Barge Ramos, James Reyes, Mike de la Rosa, Joey Samson, Cary Santiago, and Eric delos Santos.

Bids for the Designer Barbies start at P6,000 for the short dresses, P8,000 for the long gowns and P10,000 for the multi-media designs. Serious bidders can do a look-see in advance on March 15, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Arts in the City Building at the Fort Bonifacio Global City (near the NBC Tent).

Barbie is just so timeless! Liked all the creations but super loved the Aureo Alonzo creation and the Randy Ortiz collection. :)

I Love Barbie! Though she's old (i think she's 80 plus) she symbolizes timeless beauty. My Barbie collection, also dresses like them, as if there's bash everyday.. :)
