Groove is in the heart of many a designer this year, as seen on high fashion catwalks and high street lookbooks alike. We’ve said before, and we’ll say it again—the ‘70s are back with a vengeance, and there’s no stopping the return of palazzo pants, slinky dresses, and yes, even paisley.
A testament to the fact is the summer collection by famously quirky American designer Marc Jacobs. The line was recently unveiled at a runway show in Greenbelt 4 to celebrate the opening of the newly renovated Marc Jacobs boutique in the same mall.
Taking the era’s hedonistic nightlife as its theme, the show was in and of itself a blast from the past. If we’re talking ‘70s staples, then the whole gang was present: wide-leg pants, bell-sleeves, slit dresses, jumpsuits, and boyshorts, as well as floppy hats, wide belts, and jumbo floral pieces used as jewelry. The beauty factor was also not forgotten amidst this fashion revelry—makeup sponsor Bobbi Brown transformed both Filipina and foreign models into disco divas with dramatic smoky eyes, prominent cheekbones, and ruby lips.
Electric hues like orange and fuchsia dominated the collection—and beckoned towards hot month dressing—while slightly more mellow shades of mustard, berry, and brown toned down the rainbow-bright glare. Patterns were a key element in delivering the color story—multicolored stripes, squiggles, zigzags, and mixed prints conveyed a flirty, vintage feel.
