Consider yourself lucky if having dark underarms is not one of your beauty dilemmas. But for those who unfortunately have to live with darker pits, you know how inconvenient it can get. It becomes harder to wear trendy sleeveless outfits or do activities that require you to raise your arms without feeling self-conscious. And that’s the main nuisance of all: it affects your self-esteem and depletes your confidence.
You have to understand that dark underarms are caused by several factors. Aside from genetics and hormonal imbalance, constant plucking and shaving irritate the skin, making them major causes of underarm darkening according to Dr. Jean Marquez, president of Philippine Center for Dermatology and Laser Surgery and owner of The Skin Specialist Clinic.
Now, this may raise another dilemma for you: hair removal. Shaving and plucking are the easiest and fastest ways to get rid of unwanted hair especially on your armpits. However, you can minimize darkening by following some of these tips:
- It’s always better to shave when your skin is wet. Doing so while it’s dry can easily scrape off thin layers of skin, and this causes darkening.
- Use a moisturizing agent such as shaving creams for a better shave.
- Shave following the direction of your hair growth. Doing the opposite causes friction, and when you scratch your skin too much, it eventually darkens.
- Apply moisturizer to prevent dryness and restore skin after shaving.
- Use a whitening deodorant. Try Rexona Skin Light deodorant with sunflower oil, which is specifically formulated to stop the darkening damage caused by shaving and plucking, and maintains the healthy condition of your underarms.
