Fashion faux pas and how to avoid them

Sep 13, 2008 by FN's Trixie Reyna

fashion_faux_pas.jpgBy now you know about current trends to follow and must-haves to pile your closet with. Trends change often, but dressing errors remain the same each season. Most of these include wearing the wrong undergarments, fit, combination of pieces, and accessories. Commit any of these mistakes and you’ll definitely ruin an otherwise beautiful, trendy outfit.

Fashion savoir faire cannot be complete without knowing the other side of the coin. So what are dressing mistakes you must avoid at all cost? Here’s a list of some fashion faux pas and how to avoid them, according to StyleTips101.com and Women’sFashion.Suite101.com.

1. Wearing oversized clothing.
There’s a right and wrong way of wearing oversized clothing. The right way is pairing this season’s slouchy pants with a tighter fitting blouse. Going over-sized all the way is totally wrong: baggy shirt, baggy pants, etc.—which are not meant to be worn loose if you want to look fab at all.

2. Wearing ill-fitting clothes.
A follow up to #1: do not wear clothes you have outgrown. A button-down top that’s bursting around the chest area or shirts that are obviously meant to be long-sleeved that fall one or two inches short of reaching all the way to your wrists obviously do not fit you anymore and must therefore be discarded or given away.

3. Wearing red and green at the same time.
This is quite self-explanatory, but to illustrate, you would certainly hear at least one person greeting you, “Merry Christmas!” Moreover, these colors really do clash. This also applies to makeup.

4. Short skirt and short top.
If you’re going to wear a miniskirt, don’t wear a short top with it; you’ll only end up looking skanky. Instead, pair a miniskirt with a top that reaches your hip bones. Accentuate with a wide belt. Short tops are best paired with jeans.

5. Too much jewelry.
Yes, standout accessories, such as chunky necklaces, are hot this season. But pairing them with equally show-stopping earrings, cuffs, and rings may be overdoing it. Keep things simple. If you’re wearing a standout necklace, downplay everything else.

6. Wearing fashion that doesn’t suit you.
Sure you know the “it” looks for the season. But it doesn’t mean you must follow all trends that come out, especially since a lot of them don’t suit everybody. If it doesn’t compliment your body type, don’t force the issue.

7. Visible panty lines.
If you’re going to wear thin, clingy, or white bottoms and dresses, make sure those embarrassing panty lines don’t show. Wear the proper underwear: a thong or seamless undies are your best bet. Make sure your thongs don’t stick out of your pants or skirt waist, too.

8. Footwear mix-ups.
While fashion has become much more lax these days when it comes to things that go well together, it is still safer not to pair dark socks with white shoes or white socks with dark shoes. And if you want to wear sandals, do not wear socks. Similarly for peep-toed shoes, do not wear pantyhose or you'll have the webbed-toe look.
