It can be embarrassing to spread an unwelcome stench in the room when you take off your shoes. The main culprit to blame are the bacteria and fungus that thrive in damp environments like your sweaty feet.

Here are simple hacks you can try to get rid of excess moisture:

1. Wash your feet with anti-bacterial soap.

Pay attention to the skin in between your toes where the moisture and smell usually start.

TRY: Cetaphil Antibacterial Gentle Cleansing Bar, P500, drugstores

2. Mist a deodorizing spray or dust foot powder to control the perspiration that leads to smelly feet.

Always dry your tootsies before putting on socks and shoes.

TRY: Human Nature Deodorizing Foot Spray, P149.75, Robinsons Department Store

3. That said, never go sock-less when wearing shoes.

Wearing shoes sans socks traps sweat, which makes it conducive for bacteria to multiply fast. Plus, when dead skin mixes with sweat and dirt, it creates a foul-smelling black gunk on the insoles! Get footsie socks, a pair that won’t show even on low vamp shoes. (Editors' Note: The "vamp" is the part of the shoe covering the top of your foot.)

TRY: Call It Spring Bertschy Socks, P455, Alabang Town Center

4. You’ll still smell the stench when you let your clean feet wear dirty shoes.

Also, it’s gross. After taking them off, wipe the insoles dry, and dust baking soda or stuff old newspaper inside your footwear to absorb the odor. Mist with a disinfectant spray if you must.

TRY: Lysol Disinfectant spray in Crisp Linen, P699, supermarkets

5. Synthetic shoes can't let your feet breathe, leading to a pungent smell after removing them.

As much as possible, stick to footwear made of natural materials like canvas and genuine leather.

TRY: H&M Premium Suede Boots, P3,690, SM Megamall

If you’ve tried all of these remedies and your feet still reek, consult a dermatologist or podiatrist to address the issue.
