Raccoon eyes and flaking mascara can easily ruin anyone’s look. You try so hard to conceal and brighten the under eye area with only the most potent concealers to find your liner and mascara smudged by lunch time. Not sexy at all.

Here, four ways to keep your liner and mascara in place all day long:

1. Choose the formula wisely
Keywords we like to look for when we select liners and mascaras: "smudgeproof," "waterproof," and "long-wearing."

For eyeliners, we recommend opting for liquids and gels instead of pencils, because they last longer. For mascaras, choose waterproof formulas, because non-waterproof mascaras smudge easily, making you look like you have really dark under eyes.

If you’re still scared that they will be tough to remove at the end of the day, don’t be. Take a cotton pad and apply some baby oil on it. Gently press the pad against your eye and let it break down the pigments. After about 20 seconds, lift the pad and you’ll see that most—if not all—of the products are gone.

2. Don’t forget about primers.
Most of the time, oily lids are the main culprits for smudged liner and mascara. Address this problem by layering eyeshadow primer and translucent powder on your lids first before applying your liner.

And in case you didn’t know, lash primers exist! Brush your lashes with one coat of lash primer before you apply your regular mascara to prolong the wear.

3. Mix your products.
If you’re a bit unsure about your liner skills, use an eyeliner pencil to apply your liner first. Then go over the area with liquid or gel liner afterwards.

For mascaras, mixing products can also work—layer a volumizing mascara over your lengthening one and you’re looking at full and long fringes forever.

4. Lock everything in place.
So you’ve heard the hack of setting your gel liner with a bit of eye shadow to keep it in place all day long, right? You can also use this same rule to keep your mascara from transferring onto your under eye area. After curling your lashes—just before you apply your mascara—sweep a bit of translucent powder or nude eyeshadow below your lower lash line. This step will keep your products from smudging.
