Covering your roots—especially if your hair is starting to turn gray—can be an expensive hassle, especially when you don’t have the budget to frequently go back to your colorist for retouch sessions. While you can technically spend an afternoon to dye your own hair, not everybody has the time for it on a regular basis.

If you’re often busy and on the go, you may want to try these quick-fixes to keep your hair dark and shiny.

Part your hair differently.

Sometimes, the roots of the hair exposed to your usual parting tend to flatten and look like they’ve lost more color than the rest of your strands. Switch up the direction of your part to add a bit of volume to hide the disparity. This can also help draw less attention to patches of graying or white hair you may already have.

Get beach waves.

Similar to the previous number, volume is the key to making your root camouflage work. Get beach waves with a quick blow dry, or just braid your hair with a texturizing product, and let it air-dry. Aside from hiding your roots, getting beach waves is probably one of the fastest ways to upgrade your relaxed day look.

Retouch with a hair concealer.

There are now quick-fix products that can help you hide your roots on the fly—even if you only have time for a bathroom break in between meetings. Hair concealers, which can sometimes come in wands, sticks, and sprays, can do the trick as long as you pick the right shade that will blend well with the rest of your tresses. These are great for covering the gray roots on your forehead and temples.

Blend with hair shadow.

Hair shadows are great for hiding roots on the top of your scalp where you usually part your hair. These are easily applicable, won’t make your hair feel oily, and won’t flake off. They can also give your hairline a fuller effect, as well as well as conceal any bald spots you may have.
