1Fine-haired ladies, rejoice! Volume-challenged locks can finally get a lift without clip-on extensions and teasing. Backcombing your hair to create bodacious volume may be potentially damaging to strands when done on a regular basis because it breaks down the protective coating of each strand, causing breakage and split ends.  While we can’t really alter genetics to force your scalp to produce thicker follicles, we’ve found the next best solutions to pump up the volume. Say hello to va-va-voom hair with our hair-raising tips below.

Ask for a balayage.
Boost the dimension of your locks by getting a balayage ombre. Balayage is French free-hand coloring technique wherein the stylist adds highlights on your hair without the use of foil. The result? Lush-looking locks with a gradual, sun-kissed ombre. (Balayage Ombre, starts at P3,500 at Azta Urban Salon Alabang Town Center, Katipunan Ave., Eastwood, and SM Jazz Residences)

Get glossed.
The high shine treatment coats each follicle and increases the strands’ diameter, creating the illusion of a thicker mane.

Use styling powder.
Dust styling powder to fatten hair up without weighing it down. Bumble and Bumble’s Prêt-à-Powder (P1,499, at www.beautymnl.com) provides unbelievable lift and lasting fragrance.

Rinse well.
Water down your shampoo and conditioner completely. Leftover product will only weigh your fine strands down.

Try a different part.
Flipping your hair in a different direction will instantly give your locks a massive boost.

Get a layered cut.
Layers can lighten up the load, and produce  thicker-looking tresses.

Use large rollers.
Victoria’s Secret Angels get a serious bombshell hair boost from big rollers. Here’s how: Muzzle the roots with a dollop of mousse, wrap the top section with large Velcro rollers, blast with a hair dryer, and let loose for bouncy locks. This trick works well with long-maned gals.
