Teens with Healthier Lifestyles Are Generally Happier, Study Shows

We all want our kids to find happiness; research shows that it starts with helping them lead a healthier lifestyle. By Jennifer Chan

As parents, we make it a point to know everything we can about our kids—who their friends are, how they’re doing in school, and what they’re up to when they’re not studying. However, we sometimes fail to consider one important thing—their happiness. Do you know if your kids are happy or not? More importantly, how can you help them become happier individuals? A new study has the answer you need. According to the researchers, teens who have healthier habits tend to lead happier lives

In the study, researchers looked at the health habits of 5,000 young adults aged 10 to 15 in relation to their level of happiness. Based on the results, those who had never drunk alcohol were between four to six times more likely to be happier than their counterparts. Young adults who smoked were less likely to find happiness than those who didn’t. In addition, those who ate more fruits and vegetables were happier than those who consumed mostly junk food and fizzy drinks. But while these results are quite straightforward, applying them in real life is a challenge. 

According to the study, 12 percent of kids aged 13 and 15 were already smoking, drinking and getting into all sorts of trouble. Meanwhile, 41 percent of them had had an alcoholic drink a month prior to the study. Since this is quite an impressionable age, some kids might find themselves making unwise decisions. It is therefore our responsibility to steer our kids in the right direction. While we do have to give our kids room to find themselves and their own happiness, we should also teach them to use their freedom responsibly.
