Charlize Theron has denied rumors that she gave Sean Penn the cold shoulder before they officially broke up.
The South African-born actress split with fellow A-list actor Sean, 55, last summer after a year and a half of dating and posing at red carpet events together.
Speculation swirled that theCharlize had “ghosted” Sean, after a source close to the couple told Us Weekly last June that the Oscar-winning actress had not returned her former beau’s calls or email messages.
But almost a year on Charlize, 40, has decided to set the record straight about the true cause of their split.
“There is a need to sensationalize things,” she told The Wall Street Journal. “When you leave a relationship there has to be some f**king crazy story or some crazy drama. And the f**king ghosting thing, like literally, I still don’t even know what it is. It’s just its own beast.”
She added that, contrary to the rumors, the breakup was an amicable decision.
“We were in a relationship and then it didn’t work anymore,” the blonde beauty shared, adding, “And we both decided to separate. That’s it.”
Charlize also put paid to the rumor that Sean was considering adopting her young son Jackson, whom the star adopted in 2012.
She also adopted a little girl, named August, in July 2015 while she was dating The Gunman actor.
After acknowledging that Sean was sympathetic to her children’s situation, she added that the relationship was far too new for the couple to be considering co-parenting.
“We were very, very new in a relationship. The stories that Sean was going to adopt Jackson, and all of that was not true,” she explained. “It’s not something that happens in 18 months. You can’t do that to a child.”
Charlize has a jammed packed 2016, with four new movies coming out, including The Huntsman: Winter’s War which due out in the U.K. next month and The Last Face in which she plays an international aid agency boss later this year.
