Theater roundup: Noli and Fili revisited, Othello, and more

nolifiliposter.jpg* We get a glimpse of Rizal's Noli and Fili set in the 20th century with the Philippine Educational Theater Association's (PETA) Noli at Fili Dekada 2000 (Dos Mil). Set in a small town in the Quezon province dominated by small town politics and social mores, the play imagines the backdrop of Rizal's novels in the 20th century. * UA&P's theatre company, Dulaang ROC, opens its 19th season with Usap-Usapan: Mga Dula Ni Tony Perez, a series of one-act plays. The Perez lineup includes Sierra Lakes, Gabún, The Wayside Café, Biyernes, 4 Ng Hapon, and Sacraments of the Dead. Tickets are at P50 for single entry and P130 for triple entries. The series kicked off last Tuesday and will run until Sept. 6, 2008. Weekday shows start at 7:45PM; weekend shows at 4PM and 7PM.

* The thesis class of Theater Arts majors of the Ateneo de Manila University presents Pag-Haya, a trilogy that features Bahay-bahayan by Jacky delos Reyes, Tagay by Jo-Anne Quiros, and Isang Libong Tula para sa Dibdib ni Dulce by Layeta Bucoy. Productions run until Aug. 23 at the Fine Arts Theatre, Gonzaga Hall, ADMU. For ticket inquiries, contact Mik Hirang at 0917-5220905.

* Tanghalang Ateneo stages Shakespeare's Othello: Ang Moro ng Venecia, penned in Filipino by Rogelio Sicat and Luna Sicat-Cleto. Othello features theater stalwarts Nonie Buencamino, Teroy Guzman, Irma Adlawan, Missy Maramara, Ron Capinding, Rody Vera, and Neil Ryan Sese. The play runs until Sept. 6 at the Rizal Mini Theater, Loyola Schools, ADMU. Show starts at 7PM, while Saturday shows are at 2PM. * Dulaang UP restages The Silent Soprano, a musical that revolves around domestic helper Margie, who must choose between fame and artistic freedom when her career is launched in Hong Kong.
