Gone are the days when you choose a smoking or non-smoking seat in a resto. From no smoking restaurants to no smoking cities (our very own Makati is an example), just shows that the smoking ban has certainly taken full effect.
Some areas here in Tokyo take it even farther by forbidding smoking while walking. I suppose it lessens littering as smokers are known to throw their butts wherever they please.

While smoking is bad for one's health, it is not humanly right to condemn smokers to dingy smoking rooms that reek. I find the solution just needs a sprinkling of design.
To ensure that smokers and non-smokers co-exist peacefully in a city filled by both health-freaks and nicotine addicts involves careful planning. Tokyo Midtown in Roppongi, one of the most luxurious shopping complexes in the Tokyo, did just that.
The designers of the place (more info here) created the most aesthetically beautiful smoking room I've ever seen. It's so nice and relaxing that even non smokers would love to hang out in it. Plus, it's also the most pleasant smelling smoking room I've been to.
So even if the people in there are doing their lungs some serious damage, they get to enjoy the design and soak in the lovely garden view. When you think about it, that's exactly what drinkers do in swanky bars anyway--punish their liver drinking single-malts while lounging on a Cobonpue chair.
