Olympic diet: What's on the menu?

Aug 14, 2008 by FN's Shar Bareng

olympics2008.jpgAs the 2008 Olympics host, Beijing now serves as temporary home to around 28,000 athletes from all over the world, all with diverse diets and strict dietary requirements, such as vegetarian, Halal, or kosher. We wonder: what could the host country possibly be feeding athletes and journalists from all over the world?

We got word from New York Times that the task of feeding the athletes and journalists has fallen on the laps of Aramark, a Philadelphia-based private company that designed a menu featuring 800 recipes, including Chinese specialties like Peking duck, congee, and noodles, as well as dishes from Italy, Northern Africa, Greece, Spain, and Latin America.

Just in case you want to know how much food and ingredients are cooking in the Olympic kitchens, Aramark is serving the following:

  • More than 35,000 pounds of duck
  • More than 14,000 pounds of tofu
  • 150,000 pounds of beef
  • 1 million apples
  • 20.1 million servings of rice
  • 743,000 potatoes

Sounds like a lot of protein and carbs to us! We're left to wonder just how much vegetables there are for salads, too.
