Now Playing: Altar Boyz

No, they're not exactly a charismatic group, but a Christian boy band--yup, you heard that right!--in the hit off-Broadway musical, Altar Boyz.

Meet Matthew, Mark, Luke, Juan, and Abraham, the self-anointed apostles of pop in this musical-satire presented by Repertory Philippines. When they say apostles of pop, they really mean it--they come in complete with the catchy melodies, freaky moves, and possibly lots of hair gel. Their mission? To cleanse all the souls in the audience with their songs. Just the thought of that already gives us a hint of a riot it would be with the audience!

And while you assume that they're all Catholics, the surprise is actually with Abraham, who happens to be the only Jewish member of the band. Despite this major difference, the rest of the boys take him in anyway because of his songwriting skills. Hmm, can his presence in the band mean a lot more than just contributing catchy tunes?

Here's a video of the New York Cast performing one of their songs, "God Put the Rhythm In Me.":

Altar Boyz stars up and coming young theater personalities Chevy Mercado, PJ Valerio, Red Concepcion, Reb Atadero, and Reuben Uy, and directed by Chari Arespacochaga, who recently worked on the Manila Production of Avenue Q. You can catch it at Onstage Greenbelt 1, Makati City, from April 4-7, 2008.
