If ballet is your cup of tea, why not indulge in Ballet Philippines' new season, aptly called "New Beginnings"?Opening on Friday, October 17, at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, "New Beginnings" is a wide-range program highlighted by the company premiere of Alvin Ailey's acclaimed "Night Creature." The program of Ballet Philippines' new season will also introduce Max Luna III's "Mga Awit" and "The Hurt We Embrace," and Alan Hineline's "Thresholds II."
"Mga Awit" will be performed live, using Filipino composer Michael Dadap's trio for tenor, cello, and piano. "Mga Awit ng Pag-ibig" serves as source of inspiration for exploring the complex world of male camaraderie as it features 12 male dancers of Ballet Philippines. "Night Creature," hailed by the New York Times as one of Ailey's happiest works, has a joyful pulse and sophisticated music.
In a recent interview, Luna described his work, "The Hurt We Embrace," as a depiction of how women are treated in in mid-20th century Filipino society. The work, a duet for a male and female couple, explores the complexities and vagaries of their relationship. "Thresholds II" by artistic director Alan Hineline and U.S. composer Jerome Begin, meanwhile, was originally commissioned and premiered by the Dayton Ballet in March 2008, prior to Hineline's arrival in the Philippines.
You can catch "New Beginnings" on Oct. 17 (3PM and 8PM), Oct. 18 (3PM and 8PM), and Oct. 19 (10AM and 3PM). For information on ticket prices, subscription, and the season's performances, call 5510221 and 551-1003, e-mail info@balletphilippines.org, or visit www.balletphilippines.org.
