In honor of Javier Bardem's recent triumph in the Golden Globes, BAFTA, and the Academy Awards for his chilling role as Anton Chigurh in the Coen brothers' No Country for Old Men, Instituto Cervantes is screening four of the actor’s finest films every Saturday this month.
First off, there was Boca a Boca (1995) last April 5, where Bardem plays a young actor who takes on a job as a phone sex operator for money. This film earned Bardem a Goya award (the Spanish equivalent of the Oscars) for Best Lead Actor. In Before Night Falls (2000), scheduled for April 12, Bardem is the Cuban poet and novelist Reinaldo Arenas, who is able to publish his work with the help of a crossdressing prison inmate, played by Johnny Depp.
Los lunes al sol (2002) tells the story of five unemployed middle-aged friends who meet daily in a bar, and whose owner was also a former employee of the local shipyard. This film, which will be screened on April 19, also earned Bardem many nominations for acting, including the Goya award for Best Actor.
Mar Adentro (2004), the last of the films to be screened on April 25, won Bardem another Best Actor trophy at the Goya Awards and numerous film festivals for playing Ramon Sampedro, a man who fought a 30-year campaign to win the right to end his life with dignity.
