As kids get more access to cutting-edge technology these days, we can't help but observe that some kids would rather play games on gadgets, socialize online, or spend the whole day in front of the television than read books. It's not fair to generalize that kids today make no time or effort to read, but sadly, it seems true. We all know reading is an intrinsic part of learning. And because of the many distractions from the multimedia world, parents have to come up with ways to motivate their children to read books.
Fortunately, efforts to improve literacy are still strong in the multimedia age. For one, there are still a lot of good selections kids can start with--we even have J.K. Rowling to thank for the Harry Potter books which continue to enthrall kids long after the series released its final installment. There are also organizations that actively come up with programs that encourage kids to read, like Pizza Hu'’s very own Book It! Program that began in 1985 in the United States and was brought to the Philippines in June last year.
Pizza Hut Book It! runs every school year, usually from July to December. The teacher sets a reading goal for each child, aided by tools. As soon as the child meets the monthly goal, the teacher awards her a Pizza Hut award certificate and a free Buddy Pan Pizza. When the child meets the goal within the six-month program, she receives an All-Star Reader certificate award and medallion from Pizza Hut.
Parents gave testimony to the program’s success in the official website, www.bookit.com.ph.
How about you? How would you encourage your child, nephew, niece, or younger sibling to read more books in the digital age?

Giving a child a gift of books is a good way to start them on a reading habit. It worked for me when i was a child. Thanks to mom for gifting me wiith a lifelong p*ssion. I now do the same to my eleven year old niece who's turning out to be a gifted writer.
