Coffee art: from mug to canvas

Apr 22, 2008 by FN's Shar Bareng

Believe it: This painting was created with mere instant coffee and water, not of acrylic, oil, or just about the conventional art mediums. And they were all painted by Sunshine Plata, a 28-year-old Pinay painter who made it to Ripley's Believe It Or Not and Martha Stewart for her wonderful creations!

These dreamy paintings, mostly inspired by Sunshine’s dreams about diwatas, are done watercolor style, with washes of varying degrees of brown, from the subtle hints to the burnt hues, hence the wistful, sepia-tones of her art.

Who would've thought that the drink we all depend on for a snappy jumpstart can be a cheap medium for such beautiful work? The ironic thing is Sunshine is hardly a coffee drinker, as she herself had admitted in GMA-7’s Unang Hirit. It’s also a surprise that she didn’t even study painting formally, as she is actually a graduate of psychology from the University of Santo Tomas. And yet, she had already held her first solo exhibit only recently, and some of her works were even sent to London and Canada.
