Why these Stars Want You to Carry Organ Donor Cards

...and have committed to share their organs to help someone else live when they die. By Liana Smith-Bautista

"I would like to help someone to live after my death," is boldly printed on the blue-and-yellow cards many of your favorite celebs now carry. Just the size of your average calling or credit card, they offer more than just a name and number or cashless shopping, they give you the chance to save someone's life or contribute to potentially life-saving research. These are organ donor cards.

Basically they say that upon your death, you would be willing to donate some of your organs to help save lives or promote research or education (which can save even more lives, even if it's a less direct method).

When PR specialist Ginggay Joven's father recently passed away, in her eulogy, she revealed that in January 2009, her dad had made a birthday wish for a kidney. It was granted a month later, when Ginggay's father was transplanted with a kidney from a brain-dead donor the day before his birthday. On February 7, his birthday, he was awake and able to fully appreciate what a wonderful gift he'd been given by someone he hadn't even known and how miraculous a wish he'd been granted. Ginggay's dad lived 14 more months before passing away earlier this year after developing pneumonia.

"It may sound morbid at first," Ginggay writes on the Facebook page she set up to spread the word about these life-saving cards, "but, truly, imagine what a pair of eyes could do to a blind person; a kidney to a dialysis-dependent patient; a heart to the weak.... please don't let them go to waste. Please give the gift of life."

These cards are Ginggay's way of promoting awareness about organ transplantation and the wonderful gift anyone can make to a perfect stranger after one's death. And she's recruited some of her celebrity friends to help get the message public!

You can also check out the Organ Donor Card Facebook page for more information on the organ donor cards and more pictures and updates. If you want your own card, join our Facebook page and get it from our office reception dask at the 7th floor Cybergate 3, Pioneer, Mandaluyong.

i've sent an email to nkti 2 days ago because i really want to be an organ donor card holder. the person-in-charge said that the card will be sent to me (i requested my card to be sent to me because i really don't have time to pick it up in their east ave office). i wish more people will choose to be an organ donor.
