An altercation between actor Raymart Santiago and columnist Ramon “Mon” Tulfo broke out on the afternoon of Sunday, May 6, at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3. GMANetwork.com reports that this occurred after the actor saw Tulfo recording what he believed to be a video of his wife, actress Claudine Barretto, while she was complaining about luggage that had been left behind in Boracay, which was where the couple and their children had just flown in from.
ABS-CBNNews.com reports that Barretto has denied the claims that she was cursing the attendant at the airport and says that she was merely complaining because their bags had been left behind and that these contained medicine she needed for her son.
“Sabi nung friend namin kay Raymart, para nang may nagvi-video,” she is quoted as saying. “Lumapit si Raymart. Ang pagsabi raw ni Raymart, ‘Sir, ano hong ginagawa ninyo?’ Sabi raw sa kanya ‘Anong pakialam mo?’ Tapos sinuntok siya ni Mon Tulfo. (A friend told Raymart that it seemed like someone was taking a video of us. Raymart approached him and asked him what he was doing. He was told to mind his own business. Then Mon Tulfo hit him.)”
GMANetwork.com reports that Tulfo denied he was taking video footage of the actress, saying he only took a photo. Tulfo claims he’d just arrived from a trip to Davao when he saw someone getting mad at a ground stewardess, and he felt sorry for her.
PEP.ph quotes Tulfo as saying, “Nag-usisa ako dahil ako'y isang reporter. Dinuduro-duro niya [Claudine], sinusurot-surot niya yung isang babae na napapaiyak. Kumuha na ako ng litrato. 'Tapos, gusto ko sanang sabihin sa kanya, lapitan siya na huwag n'yo namang gawin 'yan dahil 'yan ay maliit na tao lang naman, e. 'Tapos, kinukuha nila yung aking cellphone. Hindi ko ibinibigay. Doon nag-umpisa. Itinulak ko siya [Raymart]. Sabi ko, 'Huwag mong kunin ito [his cellphone]. Sinuntok niya ako, hindi siya tumama. (I was curious because I’m a reporter. Claudine was pointing her finger at the girl and harassing her, making her cry. I took a photo. Then I wanted to go up to [Claudine] and tell her that she shouldn’t do that because [the ground stewardess] was just a low-ranked person. Then they wanted to take my cellphone. I didn’t give it over. I shoved Raymart and told him he couldn’t take my phone. He tried to hit me, but missed.)"
Those involved were taken to the Investigation and Intelligence Division of the Airport Police Station to give the police their sides of the story. Tulfo was then taken to he hospital to have the bruises on his face treated. Barretto received bruises to the leg, where she claims Tulfo kicked her. Barretto and Santiago appeared on Showbiz Central later the same day to share their side of the story.
ABS-CBNNews.com reports Barretto and Santiago may be filing charges against Tulfo, who allegedly threatened them at the precinct. “Pagpasok ko nag-hello pa ho siya, nang-aalaska pa,” she is quoted as saying. “Tawa siya ng tawa hindi ko alam kung bakit. Ngumingiti-ngiti siya eh. Tapos nagbitaw ho siya ng salita na hindi niyo alam kung sino ang kinakalaban niyo. Iyon ang sinabi niya sa amin. Thrineaten niya ho kami. (When I came in, he even said hello, and he was being insulting. He kept laughing, and I couldn’t understand why. He just kept smiling. Then he said that I had no idea who I was up against. That’s what he said to us. He threatened us.)”
Barretto has also asked that the CCTV video of the incident be released. In the meantime, video footage of the altercation has been uploaded on YouTube by a user who goes by the handle Spamsafe and has since gone viral. As of press time, it has received over 200,000 views. You can view it below—PEP.ph reports that the man in the vest is Tulfo, the man in the gray shirt is Santiago, and the woman in pink is Barretto.
