Prince Harry Receives Humanitarian Award for Helping Military Veterans

Prince Harry visits the United States to accept an award for his efforts to safeguard the welfare of soldiers injured while serving their country. By Jasmine T. Cruz

Prince HarryBritish Prince Harry received the 2012 Distinguished Humanitarian Leadership Award from the Atlantic Council on Monday, May 7, at the Ritz Carleton hotel in Washington DC. The 27-year-old prince and his brother, Prince William, were recognized for their dedication in helping military veterans recover from physical and psychological injuries sustained during their service in the army. These efforts were done through the Foundation of Prince William and Prince Harry and by supporting charities like Walking with the Wounded and Help for Heroes.

As a recipient of this award, Harry joined the ranks of past awardees like humanitarian and U2 singer Bono and former president of the United States Bill Clinton. Other awardees recognized on Monday included UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Unilever chief executive Paul Polman, all US military enlistees, and violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter.

When General Colin Powell presented the award to the prince, he said, "Prince Harry has wholeheartedly continued the royal tradition of advocating on behalf of society's less fortunate members. Through his efforts, he restores confidence to those who have been wounded in service to his country."

Harry humbly accepted the award, and People.com quotes him as saying, "Generally, I obviously don't feel that I've done nearly enough to deserve [this award]. The very least we owe them is to make sure that they and their brave families have everything they need through the darkest days--and, in time, regain the hope and confidence to flourish again."
