Theater actress Monique Wilson has admitted that she is gay. An article from Inquirer.net reports that she made the confession during a press conference for the One Billion Rising Philippines campaign to end violence against women. She also said that she is committed to her partner of 14 years.

In an article on PEP.ph, the former Miss Saigon star said she is thankful that though there are people who are aware of her gender preferences, no one had judged her negatively because of it throughout her many years in show business.

"For all these years, I thank so many people, especially from the press, who respect me for what I am,” she said. "I know that many of you know who I am, but the respect you gave is so overwhelming. I know that is something that I should be proud of. Being a gay woman is something that I should be proud of being."

When Monique was asked why she only chose to come out recently, she replied that she felt it was the right time to set the record straight. "Every time I am here naman,' yun ang laging tanong sa akin ng ilan,” she said. “I just kept quiet about it kasi nga I am here for my art and not because of my being gay (That’s what some people always ask me every time I am here. I just keep quiet about it because I am here for my art and not because of my being gay.).”

Ngayon ko lang inamin publicly kasi nga, ilang taon na ba ako? May kinakatakutan pa ba ako ngayon (I only decided to admit it publicly because really, how old am I? Do I still have anything to be afraid of?)?” she asked. “This is the right time, I think, that I have to be public about it. Para matapos na ang mga speculations. I know that everyone will still respect me for who I really am and what I have contributed to so many people through my helping in different causes, like ito ngang One Billion Rising (This is the right time, I think, that I have to be public about it, so that the speculations will end. I know that everyone will still respect me for who I really am and what I have contributed to so many people through my helping in different causes, like One Billion Rising.)."

Monique also encouraged gay people to be proud of their sexuality and to join the fight against discrimination. "It's not about lang being gay but what have you done by being gay,” she said. "If being gay can help a community or encourage people to stand up and fight, then it’s okay. Be out and proud about it. There's nothing to be afraid of anymore.”

I admired her even during the Miss Saigon times. I saw her performed (at a close distance) once at a local mall in Alabang Muntinlupa way long before. Gay or not still I like her, I accept her for who she is. The fella got a talent that I just can't refuse. Go on Monique let it thrive! God speed!
