Ormoc Representative Lucy Torres-Gomez will be appearing in Metro Manila Film Festival entry Panday 2, reports PEP.ph, but her talent fee is something unusual: four classrooms for her district.
The “Most Beautiful Congresswoman Ever Elected” recounts that Sen. Bong Revilla, who stars in the movie, asked if she would be willing to take on a role in the film. “Pinatanong niya yung manager ko kung puwede raw akong sumali sa Panday,” Lucy is quoted as saying. “And then, may talent fee. Sabi ko, parang hindi naman yata makatarungan na tatanggap ako ng talent fee sa isang bagay na hindi ko naman talaga trabaho. Para akong nahiya...nahihiya ako.”
(He had someone ask my manager if I could join Panday. And then, there would be a talent fee. But I said, it doesn’t seem right to accept a talent fee for something that isn’t really my job. It felt shameful … I was embarrassed.)
Lucy explained that she knew there were actresses who would jump at the role. However, Sen. Revilla explained that she would be playing an “engkantada nga raw, nasa bukid, nasa kagubatan”—an enchantress living in the forest.
“So,” Lucy said, “naisip ko, nagging malikot yung utak ko. Ang dami kong shortage na classrooms. Alam kong hindi kaya ng gobyerno. Kailangan kong magsipag sa sarili naming koneksiyon. (I started to think, and my brain went into overdrive. I have a major shortage in classrooms, and I know the government can’t afford to give them to me. I needed to make things work using my own connections.)”
This is where the congresswoman got the idea for her “talent fee.” She said, “Okey, ganito na lang. Tanungin mo si Senator Bong, gagawin ko ito kung bibigyan niya ako ng classroom. Kasi binigyan na ako ni Senator Jinggoy [Estrada] ng apat na classroom. So, sabi ko, kung puwede bigyan rin ako ni Senator Bong ng apat na classroom. So, ayun. (Okay, here’s what we’ll do. Ask Senator Bong, tell him that I’ll do this if he’ll give me classrooms. Because Senator Jinggoy [Estrada] gave me four classrooms. So I asked if Senator Bong could give me four classrooms too. So there you have it.)”
When PEP.ph asked Lucy if she would be pursuing a career in acting, she responded quickly, saying, “Ay, hindi talaga, walang pagdadalawang-isip. Hindi ko talaga ma-imagine ang sarili ko…. Iwan na lang natin sa mga marurunong. (Oh, definitely not, and no second thoughts about it, either. I really can’t imagine myself [doing this for a living]. Let’s just leave it for the people who really know how to do it.)”
