Lea Salonga Urges Filipinos to Support UN One Billion Hungry Project

This ambassador for the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization visits a farm in Tarlac to strengthen the campaign against hunger.
lea_salonga_extra.jpgWomanity Award winner Lea Salonga visited farmers in La Paz, Tarlac, last month to check on the situation of the farmers after typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng hit their areas in 2009, PEP.ph reports. As a Goodwill Ambassador of the UN and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Lea's position has her promoting activities to help end hunger.

In a speech she delivered during the program, she urged President Benigno Aquino III to use OFWs’ dollar remittances for investing in agriculture. She also made sure to applaud the female farmers in the audience. “Listening to the stories earlier... I’m inspired as a Filipino, as a mother, and as a woman," she is quoted as saying on PEP.ph.

More importantly, Lea encouraged everyone to participate in the One Billion Hungry Project, which urges governments of nations the world over to make the elimination of hunger their number one priority. “Close to one billion people are living in hunger, and do not know where to get their next meal. It’s scary to think that this number could further increase,” she said on PEP.ph.“Some 37,000 Filipinos have joined the One Billion Hungry Project. As a goodwill ambassador, I know that if we work as one, our fellow Filipinos will be able to eat today. Eventually, they will be able to find the means to sustain themselves.”
