A little over a month after Whitney Houston passed away, the cause of her death has been revealed. The singer's death--she was found in the bathtub of her Beverly Hills hotel room prior to a performance for a pre-Grammy Awards party--was ruled an accidental drowning.
Craig Harvey, spokesman for the Los Angeles County Coroner's Department, revealed that cocaine use and atherosclerotic heart disease were two factors that contributed to her drowning, reports Reuters.com. Marijuana, a muscle relaxant, an anti-histamine, and anti-anxiety medication were also found in Whitney's blood stream, although these drugs had nothing to do with her death.
Patricia Houston, Whitney's manager and sister-in-law, released a statement saying, "We are saddened to learn of the toxicology results, although we are glad to now have closure."
Whitney achieved fame in the 1980s, though her star slowly declined as she became increasingly conflicted with personal issues, which included drug addiction. She last checked in at a rehabilitation center in May 2011, and, in an interview with Oprah Winfrey earlier this month, Patricia shared that she thought Whitney had put her drug abuse well behind her. Three or four days prior to her death, however, sources claimed that the pop star was engaging in heavy drinking and displaying erratic behavior.
