Filipino-Mexican singer Jessica Sanchez will be competing in the finale of reality singing contest American Idol, PEP.ph reports. Soul singer Joshua Ledet was eliminated on AI's May 17 episode (May 18 in the Philippines) after receiving the lowest number of votes from America. Host Ryan Seacrest said almost 90 million votes had been cast in total.
Jessica sang three songs on performance night: Mariah Carey's "My All," Aerosmith's "I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing," and Jackson 5's "I'll Be There."
She will be facing off against Phillip Phillips in the two-part finale, which will be held at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, California, on May 22 and 23.
Jessica is the first singer with Filipino blood to make it to the AI finals, setting a new record after half-Pinay Jasmine Trias, who competed in the show's third season, got into the top 3. Should Jessica get the title next week, she will be the first half-Filipino and the first Asian to win the show. She will also be the first female American Idol winner since Jordin Sparks (season 6).
