Finding guilty pleasure in Boyce Avenue

Feb 27, 2009 by FN's Shar Bareng

We've probably had enough of boybands, but we can’t help but swoon over good-looking musicians once in a while--especially if they do sing well.

One band that is almost impossible to resist is Boyce Avenue, who visited the country last Valentine's weekend. Seen only in YouTube or MySpace by fans who loved their covers of popular songs like One Republic's "Apologize" or Rihanna's "Umbrella," Boyce Avenue finally performed live in SM Malls as a Valentine's treat for their Filipino fans.

Boyce Avenue is composed of Manzano brothers Alejandro (lead vocals, guitar, piano), Fabian (guitar, vocals), and Daniel (bass, percussion, vocals), and their drummer friend, Stephen Hatker. This Florida-based acoustic band first got together in 2000 when they started playing in high school shows. College saw the boys going to different schools in Florida and Massachusetts, until they reunited in October 2004 to launch their first original song, "Find Me."

In 2006, the boys wrote and recorded their first three singles, which won them awards in the Independent Music World Series Competition, International Songwriting Competition, and John Lennon Songwriting Contest.
