5 Career Lessons You Can Learn from Tweetie de Leon-Gonzalez

Good Housekeeping's July 2012 cover girl shares advice on how you can be more successful in your career.

For Tweetie de Leon-Gonzalez, appearing in magazines is nothing new, especially since she's been working as a model since she was 14. Now a certified icon in the local fashion industry, Tweetie has added several titles to her name, among them mom, wife, entrepreneur, endorser, accessories designer, and TV host.

In the July 2012 issue of Good Housekeeping, Tweetie shares tales from her busy life as a supermom and a budding entrepreneur. Read on to find out what advice she has to give to other career women.

1. HAVE A SCHEDULE.

"I am a schedule freak, so more or less I know how much time to allot for a task. I always, always schedule my day. I make sure that I get to do everything on my to-do list."

2. CONNECTIONS ARE GOOD, BUT YOUR PERFORMANCE IS WHAT'S IMPORTANT.

As a veteran in the fashion industry, Tweetie has gotten nods from her contemporaries, which have led to some work opportunities, but she notes, "Yes, maybe that can open doors for you, but those are not always doors you can enter. Your friends can only help you so much; in the end you have to deliver."

3. CHOOSE OPPORTUNITIES THAT ARE IN LINE WITH YOUR BELIEFS.

"Opportunities will always be there. You can’t take everything because not everything is for you. What I chose to take on are those that are in line with my values, those that keep my integrity intact."

4. TAKE CHANCES.

Tweetie has just opened her very first store for her brand TdLG, which includes accessories, jewelry, bags, leather items, and more. The idea was something she'd toyed with for a while but only recently made true. "It’s very nerve-wracking, so it took me a long time to commit to it, but I’m beyond that now."

5. PAY ATTENTION TO THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU.

“I try my best to be with the people who at the moment I’m working with, so even If I do have a lot of things I need to accomplish, this moment when I’m with you is for you. I give the same treatment to any other task.”
