7 Tips for Staying Motivated to Workout from Karylle

This Women's Health cover girl shares advice on how to make the most of your exercise time. By Belle Yambao

Actress, singer, TV host--these are just some of the titles Karylle has under her name. But apart from being accomplished in various fields under show business, she's also a fitness enthusiast. Karylle loves running, and she's even placed in some of her races, her first being second overall in the Women's Division at the National Geographic Earth Day Run in 2010.

In the January-February 2012 issue of Women's Health, Karylle talks about her passion for running, her life after The Kitchen Musical, and her aspirations for the year ahead. If you're finding it hard to commit to your workout this 2012, check out these tips for staying on top of your game from Karylle herself.

1. RIDE THE WAVE THIS JANUARY.

“Feel the energy that people have in January," says Karylle. "Everyone's on a high; it's the start of the year. It's like the start of the day when everyone is ready to go. It's just that you have to sustain it for longer, but go with that wave because it's strong.”

2. HAVE A BUDDY.

“Find people you love who will motivate you also. Find somebody really athletic.” Karylle has a friend who lives far away, but bikes all the way to her house. It pushes her into working out instead of telling her they’ll do it next time. “Try to find people who already have the passion for this kind of thing,” she suggests. “Sasabayan ka naman nila in your pace.”

3.  TAKE BABY STEPS.

Karylle reveals that her first ever “run” was actually around the second floor of Serendra with her friend Noelle Wenceslao. “How stupid, ’no?” she says, laughing. “Until later on we would go all the way to High Street hanggang sa inikot na namin yung Fort.”

4. LOVE YOUR WORKOUT.

“I didn't realize it early on, but whenever I would run, even as a kid, I felt like I was flying,” Karylle shares. “So try to find [what it is you love.] Maybe it was biking, maybe you could get into that again. Maybe it's boxing. Maybe you have inner rage. Before, I loved boxing.  I'm so nice, but before I had a little inner rage thing going on so that really was good for me.”

5. CONSULT AN EXPERT.

While not everyone can afford a coach or trainer, Karylle says there are running clinics that provide free consultations. Some companies also have fitness programs for their employees, so it never hurts to check. “Baka your company has it and ‘di ka lang pala aware, diba?”

6. USE YOUR WARDROBE AS YOUR MOTIVATION.

Workout wear doesn’t come cheap. “Kasi it's so expensive, so you really wanna show it off,” she says, laughing. “And if you don't use it, parang ang mahal ng inaksaya mo.” Karylle, for example, loves her Stella McCartney shorts. “It was my motivation to wake up; wearing those shorts.”

7. DON'T GIVE UP.

People always say day one is the hardest, but what about the rest of it? When it comes to running, day two is harder because you’ll be sore. “Then you're kind of discouraged because you're slower than everyone else,” Karylle says. “Will you still do it?” Karylle says the best way to get rid of your doubts is to not be intimidated and keep going.
